US finally given deadline on Internet gaming discrimination issue

August 19

Yesterday, a World Trade Organization intermediary gave the United States until April 3, 2006 to end its discrimination of foreign online casinos companies. This judgment comes after a legal complaint was filed formally by the island nation of Antigua.

Four months ago, WTO judges ruled that the US barring of online casinos companies, because the interests of public morals, can only remain as long as the ban does not discriminate against foreign online casinos companies. The United States has agreed that it can conform with WTO rules by changing its restrictions, without opening itself to distant online casino gambling.

Companies in the Caribbean nation such as Sportingbet Plc and BetWWTS.com account for nearly one quarter of online bets generated in the approximate $7-12 billion gaming industry. Antigua, developed online gambling in order to make-up from it's hurricane ravished tourism economy. The counry is seroiuly interested in being able to tap the US market for inline casinos wagering. US residents are nearly responsible for 55% of bets made online.

With a small population of just over 67,000 people, Antigua is the smallest WTO government ever to file a complaint with the WTO. Latelast year, the island nation was successful when WTO judges said the Bush administration had failed to justify the ban on moral grounds and had been committed to opening the gaming industry for ten years.
